I am retired and living near Rochester, NY (Henrietta). I have been a manufacturing jeweler, machinist (manual and 1980's CNC), and modelmaker, but spent most of my career in Quality Assurance. I have a 9" South Bend lathe, Atlas horizontal mill, drill press, band saws, etc. I have been building live steam engines as a hobby for about 30 years. I built a 1/5 scale Shay - runs on propane. I am currently building a 1/8 scale 4-8-0 camelback locomotive. I run my engines at the Finger Lakes Live Steamers, near Clyde, NY. I recently designed and built a Rose Engine Lathe for making geometric patterns in exotic wood. I have also been making woodwinds - mostly recorders.

The streamlined "500" was originally built in 1957. I have rebuilt it twice, most recently with streamlining and a new boiler. It is coal fired. The Shay is a class A (2 cylinder, 2 truck) with a T-boiler. This year, I changed the stack to an oldertype and added a wood pile on the tank. It is fired with propane - 20 lb. tank behind my seat on the riding car.

I have watched a lot of videos about steam locomotives on youtube, steam locomotive is a goal that I haven't achieved yet.

The Shay plans are the Mich-Cal Shay No. 2 by Bill Harris. The book is "Logging with Steam." It is published by The Village Press - same company publishes "Live Steam and Outdoor Railroading" magazine. I did scale the engine up from the plans. I was looking at the prices for bass clarinette on ebay--ranged from 3000$ to 40,000!
