I'm trying to determine what type of steel "special k" is similar to. We have a part for our machines that the supplier says is made of special k. We're trying to have them made locally but we need to know what type of steel it is. One search turned up similarities to M-2 and another to cold rolled. The machines are made in Italy if thats any help.

Finding materials like this is difficult, especially if they are older discontinued specs. I tried to determine what the spec Kayser KE 965 was, but found two references that were very different. This material was common around WWII.

I googled and probably found the same things you did. One reference says this is Special K. but the spec itself doesn't mention the name. http://www.bohlersteels.co.uk/buag_frontend/download/grade/54/1/K100DE.pdf The Bohler name turned up several times in google with Special K.

http://www.wallworkht.co.uk/heattreat09.php This link says Cooks was the manufacturer of Special K and I also saw that.

Aisi D-3 is equal.

Good Luck.
