Not many of my repairs at work require threading, but I needed a threading tool for
those rare occurrences.
All of my tool holders are set on center for 5/8" shank tools, so I went
to Shars website to see if they had a lay-down threading tool with a 5/8" shank.
Of course they did.
Shars P/N 404-1280 at $36.95.
Most of the threads in the plant are fine threads, so the inserts are are Shars P/N 424-1381
for 48-8 TPI at $10.28 each.
When got the tool today I had to find something to thread.
I found a short piece of 3/8" 1018 steel in the scrap box, so I set the lathe quick change gears for
16 TPI to give it a trial run.
I didn't even check center. I just put the threading tool in my 5/8" turning tool holder that was
already set on center. It cut great!
That 3/8-16 thread was threaded going straight in.
.010" depth of cut on the first pass and .005" depth after that until I get close to half the
published double depth of the thread.
From there, I go .002" depth of cut per pass until I get the fit I want on the mating part.
I have never in my life set a compound to the 30.5° to cut anything under an 8 thread.
A lot of experts will say that is an absolute must.
It has never been necessary for me.
It is another good, low cost tool from Shars.
Shars has the same tool in a 1/2" shank for $34.95 and 3/8" shank at $32.95
They are worth a look when you consider the cost of other threading tools.
I am in no way connected to Shars.
I'm just a frequent customer who has never been disappointed with a purchase from them.
