Rudy Kouhoupt designed mill engine. Serialized in Live Steam over 5 or 6 issues back in the 1980s. No castings required, built up from bar stock.
I first met Rudy at the Pennsylvania Live Steamers 50th anniversary meet. I walked up to him and introduced myself. Went something like this:
"Rudy?"
"Yes."
"Forgive me for not using your proper name, but I don't know how to pronounce it. I'm Mike, and you designed the first steam engine I ever built."
Big smile came over his face and we talked for 10 or 15 minutes.
A few years later, I saw him again, and this time I had the engine with me. I told him the story, and he remembered. I showed him the engine and he was quite gracious with his compliments.
