Hello everyone, my name is Keith and am a retired machinist for the local power co. I have wanted to build a model steam engine since I was a kid but never got around to it because of life. I have been a steam nut since my grandfather took me to the Steam Pageant in Canandaigua N.Y. as a10 year old. I found you folks the other day when I went searching for info on Cole's Power models Corliss engine. I have an original set of plans from them in the 80's but never got around to building it . The other day I found them and asked myself wasn't it about time to get with it. The several threads out there this past year on this model really got me going. I don't have the castings but think I could sub with solid stock or weldments. That's what I had to do a lot of when I was working at RG&E. The newest machines we had were from the 60's dating back to Tom Edison. Mostly GE,Westinghouse and Allis Chalmers, all turbines and no recips. Nice to be here.

Welcome!
If you have read any of the threads here you probably already figured out that there are some really nice, knowledgeable people here :)
You may want to start another thread about the Corliss, I am sure you will get some replies.
I " finally got with it" ( :) ) and built my first engine this year. It was worth the wait. Now I am trying to pick out the next one.

Have fun

Scott

Good to see another builder of Coles Corliss. Out of curiosity, are your plans the Ray plans or something else?

Keith,

I'm in Rochester near East High. My only machining experience has been self taught. I have a round ram Bridgeport, a South Bend
9A and an Atlas 7B shaper.
I have built a Quorn tool and cutter grinder and a precision drill press from castings.
I've also taught myself how to re-bush SU carbs. And I have the tooling to re-bush MG spindles.

Hi Alan,Those are nice machines. I have a round ram Southbend 9x32, a 1935 Southbend 16"x6ft bed, a 1927 Southbend 9"x36 and an Arboga Maskiner 36" arm Radial drill. Those are the big boys in the shop, but the 9" is a basket case that I need to get back together this winter. So it looks like you are an english car aficionado, in my past I had a Triumph TR4A-IRSfrom '67 and a Healy 3000 BJ-7 from '65 but I learned my lesson. Can you sharpen end mills on your Quorn grinder?

Hi Richard, They are the redraws by R. Bromps from 1978 if that is who Ray is. I understand the originals from the late 40's were a bit rough.
A bit rough! LOL, yes, I have a copy of the originals by A.W. Ray. Altho' a wonderful piece of art, they are horrible for today's work. Some features triple, even quadruple dimmed and occassionally, but not often a missing dim--but even today, I miss more dims than I can count--(in Chinese). Apparently, A.W. had a wife named Eloda who put a copyright year of 1946 on the dwgs . I took the trouble to try to find out about them, all I could find was they were from Chicago or the area. I only conjecture that A.W. must have died just after the war or maybe during the war. have no idea how old he and she were. Still interested if anyone knows anything more.
