Hi all
Would it be feasible to construct a steam engine utilising
a brake wheel cylinder and piston? The old shoe type not disc.
Question inspired by the Nutty Engine IE use whats in the shop.

BR,

Almost anything is possible, if you throw enough brain cells at it.

My input would be that you wouldn't be able to use the piston, as it is designed to seal more, the more pressure that is put on it, so too much friction. Also you will have to work out some sort of valving arrangement to give inlet and exhaust to the one port.

Another problem with a brake cylinder - it is designed with a single port in the center of the cylinder that forces 2 pistons outward. it would have 2 relatively short stroke pistons going opposite directions. Single acting only.

kf2qd,

I think BR is on about the type with an input at one end and a single piston.

Just a thought,

Take J B Weld and close center hole. Use cylinder hone to clean up bore. Machine off the flanges that the rubber boots go on. Cylinder covers could be press fit with o- rings held in wiyh external stay bolts
Steam passages could be in cylinder covers

Just an O'l F** t rambling ???

Several years ago, I made at attempt at the Darryl Boyd's Tin Can Stirling
engine that Ranger has pointed out here.

The power cylinder was a piece of 1" copper pipe.
While talking to one of the maintenance men at work about making the
piston, he suggested checking the price on an aftermarket brake cylinder.

So I bought this 1" Brake Cylinder for $9.99

The pistons were .998" in diameter and already counterbored.
All I needed to do was drill and ream the wrist pin hole.

The engine never did run.
Maybe I'll give it another go some day...

Thanks guys
B S is right it was the single piston type I was thinking about.
Consensus seems to be, "possible but".

I like your thinking Baldrocker.... I colected many cylinder pistons when I fixed the cars jusrt cause they were ali'
I also have a brake master cylinder spare... This might also be useable?
