They used to be more popular, but they tend to kill and maim their users, so they are quite rare nowadays. You can still find a few in central Europe. I rode one that's installed in the Stuttgart Rathaus (town hall), so now I can tick the "Pater Noster" off my bucket list.

Fascinating, I don't think I've seen anything like it either and I've seen some weird contraptions in my time

An obvious solution to the problem when you see it. But the bloke who devised it is much more clever than I am.
