Hi All,

I have a couple of solenoids and was going to try my hand at a solenoid motor, but wanted to make it in the hit and miss style. Does anyonehave any experience making a governor like this that might shed some light on how I might go about it? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bret

Hi Bret,

Welcome to HMEM.

I don't have any first hand experience building a solenoid Hit n Miss engine, but there is a fellow that has several videos on youtube of hit n miss solenoid engines. Here is link to one of them:

The common IC hit and miss engines use a governor that holds the intake valve open. The same principle could be used to hold a switch open in the solenoid supply wire.

So I could use 2 switches one cam or eccentric activated and a second in series that would be tied to the governor?

Yep, that's the way I would do it. Although I suppose if you only wanted to use one switch, you could have the governor disengage the cam from the crank on the "miss" cycles. I had thought about using a cam that was loosely keyed to the crankshaft and have the governor slide the cam sideways off the key during the miss cycles. Also, another method would be to gear down the camshaft by 3 or 4 to one so it only "hit" every 3rd or 4th cycle. That wouldn't be a governor control, but it might give you the same effect.
