I absolutely love making tools from other peoples throwaways. I was given a stack of old hard drives and like many, I have several old printers in the attic I've picked up here & there.

I made this D.I. stand a couple years ago from one of the magnets from inside a drive, a piece of 3/8" shafting from a printer, a few bits of 1/2" square CRS and a wing nut & bolt. Those magnets are incredibly strong and the stand really locks down on any flat iron surface....gotta keep the chips cleaned off though.

A trick to remove the magnets from the plate is to put them in the freezer. For some reason it breaks the epoxy bond and you can then mount them where ever you want.

hey good idea. I also hear those magnets make excellent optic punch bases :D

Great device! Will build one myself.

For really strong magnets try the ones on the magnetrons in old microwave ovens.

They are awesome!

Just make sure the big power capacitor(s) inside are dischaged before you start pulling things apart as they have 2kV or so high voltage on them.
