So first of all, I have heard of the Skinner uniflow, which was a multi-cylinder uniflow engine and still has an example today that is in commercial service on the great lakes. What I am wondering though, is if it is possible to build a multi-cylinder uniflow configured as an expansion engine. If it were, what type of configuration would be best for such a project, a cross compound expanding or a tandem compound? I'm not going off of any particular design for this project, more or less I'm making my own design with some elements from my dad, Jeff Maier's, horizontal uniflow engine, which is detailed in his book.

So another thing I want to do is make the engine reversible. If I have a gear driven camshaft, how can I engineer a reversing mechanism?

I know, but it's an interesting way to build a compound engine. I'm sure it could be made into a uniflow design.
