I'm finishing a wooden chess board. I heard about Rubio Monocoat and I think I'll get a sample and try it out. Here's their website:

wow, looks like a nice product. Of course, indoors anything will work. Outdoors, UV is a killer - if you happen to live where the sun shines, as I do. I can attest to the fact that Sikkens Cetol is amazing. Not entirely transparent, but lasts at least 10x marine varnish in maritime, high UV environments.
