In this hobby we make expensive toys. Unless your engine is going to be some type of teaching tool, the end result is a piece that will sit on a shelf and collect dust.

Sometimes, just sometimes, I actually use these skills I've developed making toys on something useful.

I have this project to motorize a manual trailer dolly:

I have a 50:1 planetary gearbox I found in the dumpster at work. I purchased a 12vdc electric motor off Ebay. This stage of the project was to join the two. I guess I could've machined some aluminum, but instead I went ahead and cast the adapter out of aluminum and machine it as required.

Casting your own parts for model engines can be very useful but a lot other useful things can be made as well.
I did casting for hobby for model engines. Later parts for Aircraft Hangar doors.
