This past week we had a minor incident at work.
We use an tired old turret lathe to spade drill holes in solid stock before
it goes to the CNC turning centers. It saves time as well as abuse on the
CNC.
In that step, we true up the face of the stock then take a light cut off the
OD so the automatic 3 jaw chuck in the CNC will have it true to the drilled
hole for machining.
The young man who was taking his turn at the stock prep had done the turning
and was in the process of drilling a 3-1/8" hole with a Speed Bit in the turret.
Seems he had not backed the carriage out far enough.
The turret pushed the carriage ahead to the point that the turning tool
was forced into the chuck jaws.
No injuries or damage but a hell of a lot of noise and one embarrassed young man.
He was watching the drill very closely................
