Just finished my first project of the New Year this afternoon:

I've been ranting about converting tool chests to work surfaces, and I finally took the plunge.

Essentially, the table top is bolted through fire brick spacers to the tool chest below. This provides some heat insulation for the chest and its contents. There is more info on my web site if you like:

It's not a very big welding table, but it serves my purposes and is out of the way in my shop. Initially I considered putting a longer piece of 1/4" plate across 2 rolling tool chests. I may yet do that, but for now, this will do the trick. The square tubing rig sticking out is going to be a removable fixture for holding my vise. I suspect it will be used for a number of "attachments" for the table.

Next stop will be a two-chest rig with maple top that I want to use to mount my grinders and sanders in a line.

Cheers!
