Hi and a prosperous new year to all.

I am going to redo the piston for my Kiwi from aluminium bar stock (when the shops reopen).

I have a question about the piston ring groove. Should the depth of the groove be the same as the width of the piston ring or should it be slightly deeper?

Thanks in advance.

Vince

It should be slightly deeper for clearance sake. A couple of thousands would be fine. Better than having it bind up under heat expansion.

Ditto on the ring groove depth... 10-20 thou should be fine. Make sure the side clearance is kept to 0.001-0.002". That will help maximize compression and eliminate blow-by.

Thanks guys. Just wanted to check if what I did when I made the original kiwi piston ring grooves was correct before I remake the new piston.

out of out of curiosity, what would be the disadvantage or issue if is deeper let say by 1/8"?

Hi Vincent. Bob (Maryak) has a great section on this subject in his " Hit me miss me" build
