Hi All, Just a few words to introduce myself. I am 67, live in the north east of the UK and enjoy modelling and motorbikes. But now I think I am too old for most of my bikes, as I had a stroke a few years ago. I also had a bad fall 4 weeks ago and badly dislocated my right wrist (now can bare no weight on it) don't think I can even get my bikes off their stands!
So now I am thinking of selling my bikes and concentrating on model engine making. I have a lathe and drilling machine.
I did start on a V4 oscilating steam engine (will try to post a photo when I have time)

Hello Marsh :)

That is a nice looking V4. I'll look forward to seeing what else you decide to build.

I had a stroke at a little less than half your age. I got off easy with only minor lasting effects. However, it did convince me to give up caving. I figured it would be best if I wasn't 14 hours from the surface if it happened again.

Good luck with the wrist.

Best...
Brian

Welcome Marsh, that's a good looking engine. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Welcome to HMEM. Lots of great people and information.

High Marsh---I'm 66 and have been very involved in building hot rods and drag racing up until about 5 years ago, when my arthritis got too bad to let me do that anymore. I bought a lathe and mill and have been quite involved in the small engine hobby, having built something like 16 engines since then. Welcome, you will like it here.---Brian

Hi MArsh,
V4 looks great.Would like to build one. Please advise source of plans.
Built a Vee 2, three years ago with min boiler which has end caps silver brazed on and hydrostatic tested to 10 psi. This is ensure when my grandson inherits it,he won't get hurt by mini live steam and shrapnels.I put in safety valve too.

With the V-4 ,I plan to build a bigger boiler to suit.

Pardon the steam plant which is by aged and antique after many steaming sessions.I use aluminium sheets for for the boiler housing.Made DIY gas burners with my own DIY nozzle.
Foto shows mini steam plant in operation. The gas flame can be seen.Spent hours steaming it.

Hi Gus, The engine is a V-Four for R/C in a boat. The plans were in Model Boats by Peter Arnot, from PT 1 Feb. 1993 to PT 11 Dec.1993. This series describes a V-4 together with a suitable vertical and horizontal boiler.
Back numbers of M/B with the articles may be available E-Bay -etc.
If not copies can be obtained from Argus Specialist Publication's (ASP) photocopying service (I think).
Peter had an article on a double acting oscillating eng. June and Oct. 1988
A second series (March 90 to July 90) added a boiler feed pump and offered a couple of alternative boilers + thoughts on gas firing.
All the engines are very good, and he takes you by the hand through all the work.
