My new rotary table and tail stock with dividing plates arrived today.

Its a Soba one. I know they are not suppose to be as good as vertex but i thought I would try as it was very competitively priced. alway send it back. (It is staying)

I am very very please so far. screw free play out of the box is only 2 minutes i was led to expect about 20. i am sure this can be adjusted out. But i think that is fine for me as i can work with that. Are the vertex tables much better?

My first job is a bit chicken and egg to make a gear for my lathe so that I can cut a thread on a blank mt2 stub to mount a chuck on the rotary table.( I could buy a gear and a stub but I think you probably understand) I am going to work between centers to do this.

I have this urge to make my own gears and cut my own threads using home ground tools. But for now

Can Any one recommend a supplier of gear cutters 18 DP ?

Congrats on your new toy!

Where in the world are you, then we can suggest local (or your country at least) suppliers.

If you are in the UK, Tracy Tools sell DP cutters and while I have not bought cutters particulary from them I am a satisfied customer.

ARC Eurotrade sell gear hobs, if you delve further into their site you may find what you're looking for.

Hope this helps

Zetec,

The play in your RT sounds ok, all you have to remember is to wind it one way to your setting, if you go past it, do a full turn backwards on the handle and come back to your setting. Just like you do with the handles on a lathe or mill. That way you are eliminating backlash. Always try to work by turning the handle in one direction.

I know just how you feel, I am just starting to take delivery of almost £2K ($4K) of small tooling for my new upgraded workshop. Everything from a full 3 axis DRO to a power hacksaw to a stainless steel dentist toothpick, its just like Christmas all over again.

Don't you just Love new shop deliverys ? ;D ;D ;D There is a Musical / Movie called The Music Man and a scene /song called The Wells Fargo Wagon Is A Comin that I like to whistle every time I see the UPS truck coming down our long drive. :D

-Bret

Edit: The original musical was set in the early 1900s in Iowa. Here is a goofy lip synched version of the song:
