Folks I was cleaning out my shop the other day and I found this fixture, or some sort of holding device. I am not a machinist so I do not know what it is. The overall length is 11". The bottom is made to fit on something and then clamp to it with the two brass screws. The distance between the inside of the bottom rails is 9-1/4". Any idea of what this is and what it was used for:

Cool! I see it now. And sorry, I have no idea what it is.

I have no earthly idea where this thing came from or what it is for, maybe someone will recognize it sooner or later.

It looks similar to a gem cutters tool used to align stones with dop-sticks.

The idea there being you stick a chunk of rock onto the end of a stick with some waxy glue and grind/polish half the stone into shape. Then once that end is done, you move the stone to another stick by gluing on another rod square on the now-finished end and unglue the first stick... and keep everything aligned so the bottom of the stone doesn't come out off-angle from the top.

Could be an alignment tool for welding two rods together. Dissimilar metals, gap for getting all the way around.

I am pursuing this line of thought. I am awaiting confirmation of my registration on this gem site and I will post the picture to this group to see if they know what it is. I appreciate the lead.

I also wonder if you couldn't put another center in it and use it for tool and cutter grinding or motor truing or some other between-centers sort of inspection/light work. Looks like the screws on the side are to clamp it to some sort of wide flat object.

How big is it anyway?

The overall length is 11" and the width between the guides on the bottom is 9-1/4".

Just by looking at it, there seems to be a piece missing.
Imagine another centre being clamped on the other side (both sides look like they do the same job).
The curvature on the back piece suggests it is for holding a larger diameter between centres.
It might just be a drilling fixture that clamps onto the table of a drill press, and once set up, just by releasing one of the centres allows quick change of the piece part, or even some sort of balancing unit.
Whatever it is, there doesn't look like there is much to salvage for making engines out of.

I don't know what it is but I want it. I will use it to hold taps and grind the end down on a surface grinder.
Don Give me a call at 310 547404 after 6 california time.

Maybe for soldering/welding two rods of the same diameter together?
