Hi - I'm new here. I stumbled across this site after taking my kids to see the Waterworks Museum in Boston, and suddenly remembering "Oh yeah! I wanted a little steam engine when I was a kid!".

I also happen to like to build things, but to date my outlets of the past have been RC planes, some woodworking / home repair stuff, and basic car maintenance.

I used to do some manufacturing engineering in a factory / tool room (very nearly 20 years ago!), so I have an understanding of machining concepts - but the actual hands on operation was not my job.

It had not occurred to me until now that projects like these can be taken on at home, so consider me enlightened. Everything I saw in the factory was way beyond "home scale".

I've already done a bunch of lurking. If you see me posting, it will probably be more questions than answers for now.

Thanks.

Welcome Matthew,

If you built RC planes, you shouldn't have any problem building small engines.
Just save your money and start looking for tools.
It's a slippery slope, but a lot of fun on the way down.
