I'm in the process of remodeling my shop, which is one bay of a two car garage that is in the basement level of my house. I would like to do something different for storing my flammable and combustable liquids. My current method of storage is in their original metal containers on a shelf. I'm thinking of changing to storing a small amount of each in the garage, and storing the bulk containers in my garden shed. In both the garage and the shed, I need to determine the appropriate place to store them.

Therefore, what are the special features of a flammable storage cabinet? While I would ideally like to purchase a real one, finances may not allow that. Therefore, if I have to construct something (and I'll keep looking for a good deal on a real one), I'd like to include as many those features as possible. Any thoughts?

It should be double wall construction. All steel, but?/ - gauge unknown??
Covered, or right angled door frame seating. No, linear(see light through it) boundaries when the door is shut.

They must be marked (usually red lettering on all yellow background).

A phone inquiry to a local firestation might be more productive and much more specific to your local laws and regulations. They are always glad to have someone call and not be reporting a fire ;D

For a technical response.

"1. Unlisted metal cabinets shall be of steel having a
thickness of not less than 0.044" (1.12mm)
(18gauge). The cabinet, including the door,
shall be double walled with 1-1/2" (38.1mm)
airspace between the walls. Joints shall be riveted
or welded and shall be tight fitting. Doors shall be well
fitted, self-closing and equipped with a latching device,

OR,

2. Unlisted wooden cabinets, including doors, shall be
constructed of not less than 1” (25.4mm)
exterior grade plywood. Joints shall be rabbited
and shall be fastened in two directions with
wood screws. Door hinges shall be of steel or brass.
Cabinet shall be painted with an luminescent-type paint.
Doors shall be well fitted, self-closing and equipped with
a three point latch.

Regardless of wood or metal cabinet, each cabinet shall have the followings:
1. The bottom of the cabinet shall be liquid-tight to a height of at least 2" (50.8mm).
2. The door shall be well fitted, self-closing and equipped with a three point latch .
3. A conspicuous label on contrasting background which reads, “FLAMMABLE –
KEEP FIRE AWAY” on the front."

Those guidelines are the minimum requirements for flammable liquids storage at
a local university.
