I have an ER collet chuck for an import lathe. However, there aren't
any collets with it. I'm not sure of the size. If I measure the hole in
the closer, will that tell me the size ? I think their most likely ER 25.
It's an off brand lathe that has FS-450A written on it. 8" swing and
14" from the jaws of the three jaw chuck to the live center.

I just turned 73 and haven't done machining for several years. I have
a South Bend Heavy 10, that import and a Gorton pantigraph that I've
made into a mill. That's where I'd like to use the collets. As of now, I
can only use 3/8' cutters in my mill.

I'm looking forward to building some small engines. You guys sound like
your all having lots of fun here. Thanks for any help.

Hot chip: First of all welcome to the board. Second of all good question some I have wondered about but never bothered to track down the answer.
If you look at this chart
http://www.rego-fix.ch/eng/katalog/ti/ti_fs.htm
it gives the dimensions for the E-R collets
the ER designation number appears to be the diameter in millimeters of the collet at some arbitrary mid point. I know the point is actually defined.
The answer you are looking for. ER-16 -40 the largest diameter of the collet is 1 mm greater than the ER size designation.
So yes you should be able to measure and easily what size you need.
