i am trying to work out some possible combination gears to have a torque of around 10Nm from a 12 V dc motor rated as .4 Nm i want to use it for a scissor jack. anyone with some sort of idea.

To get 10Nm torque out of the 0.4Nm motor I think you need, in theory, a 25:1 gear reduction. Then you will need to allow for friction losses, say 10%, so you really need to calculate for 11Nm output. Then I'd build in a reserve safety factor of at least 2, so I'd calculate for 22Nm output, or a gear reduction of 55:1. That might be achievable in a rational-size package with a couple of planetary gear reductions.

But I wouldn't guarantee I know what I'm talking about. ::)

I would be inclined to see if a hefty battery-powered electric drill would have enough torque to work.

Newton Metres. Are those something like Fig Newtons?
I'd have to look up the conversion to Foot Pounds.
...lew...

well dont no if this helps but i moded a car jack by welding a 14mm nut to the end and made up a shaft that held a 14mm socet in a 18v cordles drill
