About fifteen years ago I took a night course at a local high school on building a small live steam Traction Engine. We finished the term but not the engine. I've gotten it out to try to finish it off, but the drawings I have aren't complete (for example, the ports on the pivot plate aren't dimensioned). Does anyone recognise these plans? It's clearly been copied from a book. I'd like to acquire a full copy.

Thanks!

Hi Thad,

Unless I need spectacles all the dimensions are on the drawing. The values in brackets are in "mm" with the inch equivalents at the side.

I agree that it doesn't explicitly give a dimension for the two hole spacings in section "B-B" but the drawing indicates that the two counter bores are just on each side of the centre line without touching each other. How far down from the top will depend upon the port positions on the other part/half. I don't think that they are at all critical. Have a look at other wobbler designs and see what dimensions they use.

I may have lived a sheltered existence so far but I've never seen a set of plans with metric and inch "equivalents" being given so far off from actual values. The rounding is simply terrible. For instance, 3/4" is given as 20mm when it's really 19.05mm. I guess if it's the same all the way through and you stick to one format it might be okay but it makes my head hurt thinking about dealing with variable sizes like that.

The pic looks like a Kenneth Wells Traction engine, I have the castings somewhere - it's been 2 yrs since we moved here and things are still in a mess.

That's the very one! These plans are actually on site, but don't give assembly drawings or photos of completed model. With the Wells name, however, Google image search was able to come up with many photos of completed engines, so I now know what it's supposed to look like. Thanks!
