Here is another version of a 1" X 42" belt sander. Salvage 1 HP pool pump motor which required a base welded up to fit the C face motor. Column made of channel with an idler pulley to maintain belt tension. Ball bearings in the top and idler pulleys, The face of the top and bottom pulley are crowned about 1 or 2 degrees with a file.

Prior to making this, I had a Grizzly which I had to make so many repair parts for that I decided it was easier to start from scratch.

Looks handy. I can't quite make out--is there a platen behind the belt?

Yes, about six inches long and starts just below the table. A Z shaped piece of 10 gauge is held by the two cap screws just visible beside the belt.
 
Nice looking grinder. In retrospect, I wish I had used an idler instead of a spring in the column. I get quite a bit of belt flap on mine.
