Hi,

i'm just building a V10: Formula One like :)
(10x 10ccm / 24mm bore and 22mm stroke)

ZK_montiert.jpg

my questions:
has anyone experiences with DIY spark plugs ?
Rimfire V1 should be suited size :)
but the price is at 10 cyl out of the question :-(

what materials can i use for isolator and electrode ?
maybe PTFE and X5CrNi18-10 (1.430x) ?

next: would build carburetor too.
maybe 3 as registered (one after the other opened depend on speed)
are there any plans available for small ones ?
or "injection" like schillings discribed in his book ?

last:
now i have to set what i build:
glow or spark ignition - what is an useable compression ratio for both types ?
if spark i would like to build a CDI (10 items - each cyl an own one)

any hints and/or tips ?

Regards Frank

Hi Jimmy
I dont have any experience on multis, but I know what I like, so will be following along !!
looks great so far
your own design?
Pete

Right at the moment I'm regretting having built my own sparkplug. I'm having issues with my engine which I can not pin down, and my DIY sparkplug is suspect.---and there is no factory made plug that will fit my engine, so now I may have to modify the cyl head to put in a factory plug. Multiply that grief times 10 and you may find that $200 for Rimfires isn't that bad a deal.----Brian

Hello Frank!

OK here goes!

I as well as others have successfully made spark plugs. It is very possible.

If Rimfires are useable I suspect 1/4-32's are your plan? If so Dale Detrich makes plugs for $12 and may cut you a better deal for 10.

Many materials are used but I have made mine from 12L14 for the base, corian for the insulator and nicrome wire for the electrode.

There are plans for carbs available from Bob Shores (minimix) and Jerry howell's websites.

Hi Frank,
My 302 V-8 and my 4 cylinder OHV engine both use home-made plugs. I have used Corian, Teflon and some other dialectic materials for the insulators.
Making carburetors is not a problem but trying to get them adjusted to run in sequence would be quite a task. If they all fed a common manifold then every time another one would open up it would affect the one that was already being used and so forth and so on. If you want to use multiple carburetors you could feed sets of cylinders with one.
As far as individual ignitions. That's doable but getting trigger signals would be very complex and then you'd need 10 ignitions. For model engine work simple is better.

What a project, Jimmy i'm racking my brain just trying to envisage the firing order, can't wait to here it run.

Hi,

thanks for your replies

i'll build the sparks myself with teflon :)

next problem:
i need a tube bender for tubes D10 x d9 (nearly 13/32 x 11/32) of stainless steel.
is there anywhere a (free) plan download ?
the bend radius is 23mm at all bends ...

the exhaust should be look like this:

i think i have to start an own Project-thread :)
