i have asked many questions about a qucik change tool post here and appreciate all the answers. i am about to make the purchase and want some final advice.

the base of my compound where my old square tool holder went is 2 1/8 square and from center line of my chuck to base of compound is 1 1/16 inches.

my swing is 12 inches

i am looking at buying a axa or 100 alorus style holder its base is 2 1/2 inch square and its height (tool holder area height) is 2-1/4.

the bxa or 200 is 3 inch base with height of holder height is 2-3/4

attached is an image of my lathe in very poor cleanup condition with dimension drawn on it.

which tool post do you recomend for these dimensions? axa or bxa?

thanks for everyones help.

I would go for the 100 at 2 1\2 " as the tool holders will be bigger to match the base , it may limit the diameter you can turn , and may not let the tool past the chuck .

I think you would be better with the AXA. I checked my BXA And the 3" dimension is to the outside edge of the wedge. The square part is 2 9/16" which will still overhang the square on your compound.

The other issue to consider is the BXA tool holder is bigger and beefier so the tool will sit higher which may mean you cannot get your tooling down to centre height.

Just wanted to update and say that i did go with an axa, i did have to modify my compund- where my original post mounted it was about 1/16" inch higher than the rest of the compound, a fly cutter brought it down nice and even with the rest of the compund and the axa fits very well. tools are almost right in the center of the post when adjusted to center of the stock to be cut. i love it and cant imagine how i got along without one in the past now.

Without Pictures it never happened :D

I just got a new PM1022V lathe. My first mod is going to be mounting a 100 AXA QCTP which arrived yesterday, so I will be getting to it this weekend.

I will probably post it under a new thread, and I promise I will include pictures

I measured my BXA toolpost for a similar thread, top of the (5/8") toolholder slot is at 1-1/8" above the base when dropped right down, so you wouldn't be able to use bigger than 1/2" tooling, so the AXA sounds like a better fit.

Looking good!

The last of my pieces & parts are supposed to be here tomorrow. I hope to at least get started this weekend, but given that I have to make a trip to Tacoma on Sat., and Sunday is Easter, I might not get much done...

if anyone notices the parting blade mounted is a bit lower than the middle as i stated earlier that they were hitting right in the middle of my tool post, its because the blade holder holds the blade at an angle and i must lower it a bit futher the more i extend the parting tool.

i think im going to have to do a major cleanup this weekend.

which brings on another question, what do you use to clean your lathe? wd40, 5w30, blue paper towels, etc? i am ashamed after looking at my pics.

also, shop vac, compressed air with saftey glasses ?

I try to sweep up as much of the loose stuff as I can first, then use the shop vac to get the rest.

For cleaning up the general grime I mostly use WD40 & blue paper shop towels. When done cleaning, I wipe down all unpainted metal surfaces with a light coating of #2 way oil.
