I stumbled across this piece of software today.

http://cubify.com/products/cubify_invent/

You can buy it for $49 and you can also download a free, 2 week trial to try it out first. I believe this to be a modified version of Alibre since the look and feel is very similar. It's quite powerful and really easy to use, especially if you are at all familiar with Alibre. The only output file formats you can create are its own drawing file format and .STL files which are widely used for 3D printing. It won't publish to PDF nor will it create fancy printed drawings, but if you just want to draw something up to see what it looks like in 3D, it's pretty impressive.

The same company, 3DSystems, who bought Alibre recently, has another product that looks quite similar called Cubify Design. There is no published price for it and I'm guessing it might be more expensive. Of course, it may also have some additional capabilities such as extra file types and perhaps more formal print capabilities.

I have no affiliation with this company, but thought the price might be attractive to some who want to get into 3D modeling without spending a king's ransom.

Cubify invent is a striped down version of the old Alibre personal edition.

Cubify Design is the same as the old Alibre personal edition and I believe the price is $199.00

Geomagic Design Elements 2014 is the old Alibre Pro

And if you really want to get carried away Geomagic Design Expert for big money.

Thanks for the info, Dave. I was quoted over $800 to upgrade my Alibre Pro 12.1 to the Design Elements 2014. I've since joined the Techshop here in Round Rock, Tx and am using Autodesk Inventor as part of my membership, so I'm well covered for 3D Modeling.

When I originally bought Alibre Pro I figured I was set for life. Unfortunately, as I bought newer computers and moved to newer operating systems, I either had to subscribe to their yearly maintenance program or pay a healthy chunk for newer releases. I'm still running the Alibre Pro I bought 5 years ago on my Laptop running Windows 7, 32 bit edition of about the same vintage.

I might invest the $49 for Cubify-invent. If it can generate STL files for surfaces that I can mill with Cambam, then I doubt I'd need anything too fancy.

At first, I admit I have never worked with any Alibre version.

But after some positive comments on forums I got interested in Alibre 2 years ago. I did a thorough look through their websites.
What I found out was that IMO there are too many essential features for 3D modeling that are only available in the professional edition.

I have 10 years experience with three 3D CAD programs and I can only give this advice to forum members:
If You are thinking about buying Alibre personal, please study the list of features in personal and profession edition. Then think twice whether You might come along without all those features that are exclusive to prof. version.
For myself, I've decided never to buy a personal Alibre version, just because it misses too much I need for my 3D modelling.

I don't disagree with you, Mike, software like Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, etc., are orders of magnitude more powerful than Alibre. But I for one, and I suspect many others are simply unwilling or unable to spend thousands of dollars for the professional grade modeling systems. And, for people first learning CAD, Inventor and Solidworks can be very intimidating without guidance or good tutorials.

For an outlay of $49, Cubify Inventor will give novices a reasonably good introduction to 3d modeling and make it easier to determine what they need and can afford in the more expensive software. While I wouldn't advocate anyone flushing $49 down the toilet, it's not a bad investment just to see what 3D modeling is all about.
