Hello All,
I'm wondering what you have in the shop in the way of your favorite vise for model making projects? I've posted one that I can't live without anymore. This vise is fit with adjustable parallels that hold many shapes - square, rounds, triangles, castings and as you can see in the photos odd shapes. Once the parallel blocks are located where you want them they can be cam tightened - then final vise tighting to secure the part in place.

Many years ago I bought a 4" import vise with a swivel base. After remachining the base and massaging the fit of other parts it turned out to be quite a usable vise but it just wasn't as good as I would have liked. For years I looked for a 5" Kurt vise, 4" was too small and 6" was way to big. I bid on quite a few on Ebay but they always went for more than I cared to spend.
About 2 years ago I bid on one and lo and behold I won it for $175.00, that was with the shipping. Gentlemen I am here to tell you this is one fine vise. Parallelism, flatness, and squareness are all within .0002. I still use my 4" vise on occasion, mainly for the swivel base but really like this Kurt.

I have a Kurt 6" vise that I bought new. It was well worth the money. I use it on a 9x42" table Bridgeport copy. Once had a Chinese copy of a Kurt but it wasn't a Kurt. Dave

I have a couple 6" Kurt's and 4" in the shop. I'm running two Bridgeport's as well. I find them to be about the most accurate of any vise I've owned through the years and holding power is also unmatched. I use them every day.

The little vise I showed to start is a special and I really found it useful for irregular pieces you need to mill or drill. Really isn't a vise for roughing, but it sure saves a lot of time on some set ups.

Glacern Machine is also making a pretty nice knock off vise as well. I've used their 4" and 6" vises. They also make a 5" vise. I've attached a photo and here is the lnk to the company web - They have a nice drill chuck that I used in the shop on the lathe, mill and drill for about 2 years and am happy with it as well.

I have 2 6" Kurts and 2 4" Kurts, all purchased cheaply 2nd hand. They are excellent. I also got a bit Heinrich drill press vise recently at a garage sale for $20. I haven't used it yet, but it will hold 8x8 stock and also through the base, so any drilling into the ends of longer pieces off the end of the mill table should be possible.

Hello Sideshaft, Your vise looks like it is very useful, never seen anything like it. Do you have any info on maker or source? Thank you, Earl

3" toolmaker screwless wise around $90
Is made of two pieces, hardened and ground on all surfaces, wery precise.
Tossed the paw that engage in semicircular slots and use a hardened bolt that span the entire width. easier to move and fish through the eyebolt puller.
I do have a swivel base 4" Kurt clone. Using the term clone in quite a stretch for this Chinese POS.
Never used but is available if I need to grab something bigger.

I bought a 3" screwless vice last year and I think this is the best tool I have ever bought. My accuracy has improved 100%, and I spend less time getting it square on the table. I had all sorts of vices, swivel, drill press type and some cheap Machinist vices, but this one is the best. All sides are square, so I just drop it on the table and slide a square up to it and tighten the nuts.......Done.

For me it has to be either Gressel or Rohm. very expensive, but superbly accurate and solid last, for years.

My favorite vise?

A very rare beast, a THREE INCH Kurt Anglock vise which I bought off eBay. I didn't even know they existed! Looks just like its big brothers. Perfect for a benchtop mill.
