I studyed mechanical engineering in the 60 and the text book quoted Horse Manure as a binder. I am not making this up.

But I graduated as electrical engineer, so I am not a mechanical one.

I like your idea better.
 
Looks good, but sodium silicate (waterglass) is only $15 gallon here, so not all that much cost savings.
 
A few years ago I was watching the show Dirty Jobs and they were casting church bells. Yes, the binder was sifted manure.

Pore mans sodium sillicate can be made from "DrainO " and "Sillica jell " , a few pages on the web on how to make it, its also good for making welding rods out of fence wire and newspaper
