Recently i decided to modify the tailstock to a lever feed type(fed up with winding handle),To this end i removed the handle from the outboard end and after an examination of the mechanics involved thought i could get away with merely extending the length of the original feed screw and fastening the associated linkage to this. Duly made up extension and fitted , every thing was as expected and worked fine and indeed the system is a delight to use . However it will not eject the morse taper , could someone please tell me why and if possible offer a solution.
I do know that the original arrangement depended on the screw being extended to eject the taper but cannot see an alternative while still having a lever feed.

I believe that the extension you made must be like the silver bit in this image. A bit 1.25 diameter and 4 inches long with a piece at the front turned down to 1/2 in and threaded acme to screw into the end of the current tailstock barrel.

if this is the case then just drill it through about 5/16 and put in a knock out bar The green piece in that image. A foot of 5/16 bar will probably work like a slide hammer but if not smack it with a hammer then it will certainly eject the taper. Another advantage of this is you can also thread the back ends of your morse taper tooling and make up a draw bar so it can't come loose in the tailstock. Here are photographs of mine. i don't know how it is attached to the original Myford tailstock barrel or even if it is a complete replacement unit but it is bored though about 9/16 diameter and my knock out bar is an off cut of 3/8 stainless bar. It just came with the old ML7 I bought in the 1990s and when I upgraded to the Super 7 I just changed over the tailstock complete and kept using it.

Those two show the draw bar I made for a quick change tooling adaptor it is 1/2 inch bar.

This shows the bore in the end, I don't think it is quite as big as it looks.
