Hello,

Found this great forum while researching the Cole's large horizontal hit & miss kit that I'm considering. Been interested in model engines for some time and finally decided one would be a good project to play with between regular stuff in the shop.

I work in a machine shop, have one at home too, and completed my apprenticeship at Newport News Shipbuilding.

My usual hobby/projects are 48-53 GM trucks and primarily Detroit Diesel 53 series engines, I like to combine the two.
Here's a picture of the 48 Chevy with a 4-53T Detroit and a Roadranger 10 speed, obviously still in progress.

Most recently I picked up an 8V53T to play with, a reasonably rare engine.

In the past I played with hit and miss engines and still have a number of them. In high school I competed in VICA for small engines (lawn mowers and stuff) and did quite well, 4th in the nation one year, however I must say I can't stand working on those things any more, the old engines are so much more fun.

So model engines may be new to me and I'm sure I have a whole lot to learn, but at least I'm a little bit familiar with machine shop stuff and normal size engines.

Hi Grigg and welcome. Nice video on that diesel! You have to admit though the models are a bit easier to haul around :)

Welcome Grigg!

Glad ya here!

My dad, as a mechanic, really liked the Detroits......Took a ride in a 1976 Peterbuilt with a 8V92TA ( twin turbo, aftercooled) complete with Red,White and Blue paint job!

Fastest truck ride I ever took!.....at age 12!

I spent 6 or so months working in the plant where the series 60 and some others are made. They are cool as heck. I had the opportunity to go into the dyno cell while a monster was in full test. When I got within 4 feet of it my eyeballs were shaking and my brain went to mush. I went back to the control room I looked on the computer monitor. 4100HP and 8300FtLbs torque.

Any video of one of those?

Oh yeah!! Welcome!!

Thanks for the welcome guys,

Steve, If I recall a 16V149 marine is rated around 2,000 HP. They made a 20V149, I don't have specs for one but probably not rated any more than 3,000 at best and I doubt they squeeze 4,000 HP out of them even testing. The 20V149 is the largest "Detroit" until you get to the EMD engines (Electro Motive Division, for railroad and generators mostly), and possibly some of the newer MTU engines?
I'm only familiar with the two cycle Detroits, primarily the 53 series and a little 71 but have literature and manuals of some sort for most all of them: 51, 53, 71, 92, 110, and 149 series

Grigg

It was a MTU 16V-4000-M93

They also did the 2000 series, the series 60 and a blown V8 2 stroke. The engines I looked forward to seeing were the marine engines. They were all white, chromed out with blue hoses. NICE!! They only did 16's and less there. If you wanted more than 16 cylinders I believe they were made in germany?

I miss hearing the old Detroits out on the highway.

Here are a couple good videos of a 6-71 working through the gears and Part 2 is a nice highway pass by.

Worked on these for 10 years.

Tried to embed, but would not work for me for some reason.
