A while back there was a decision on which type of tape to buy. I had been having problems with small tapes in aluminum so I ordered some Fast spiral flute taps from Enco. Well I had the opportunity to try them out today, WOW I can’t describe the difference they make! I never had such easy tapping in aluminum. The swarf came squirting up out of the hole and the job was effortless. I’ll be adding to my new collection of some Fast spiral flute taps in the near furture. :D

Lugnut thanks for sharing that. I have often wondered how well those worked and why would one choose sprial over straight. I do a lot in aluminum and think I will give one of those a try.

What sizes have you tried? I have been thinking about a few in the 1/4 and
#10 size. I use spiral point in through holes with a "greatest since sliced
bread" thought every time I do. :) I did buy a thread forming one in 10-32
for a specific job and it worked fine in that job.
Have you tried the spiral flute on mild steel, or aren't they recomended for
that?

They do a very nice job on all metals, especially in blind holes.
I have several of them such as this one.

At work we use them for all materials, including 4340 alloy steel.

It is best to chuck them up in the machine and turn
the spindle by hand to give them straight start.
