Is it possible to braze brass to mild steel or is there a better way.any tricks would be helpful I haven't done any brazing for about 18 yrs and from memory I want that good at it

Silver solder is my favourite, not quite as strong but you need a bit less heat and sticks to almost anything.
The 2 best tricks are clean material to begin with and not to overheat, if it is spitting then it is too hot, (for brazing and silver soldering)

Here is a bit of info on brazing for you.

And a bit more on joining steel to brass.

It can be done but not easy. The melting point of brass is just a little over the melting point of brazing rod. As stated silver solder is a good substitute if you don't need a lot of strength.
