Have you ever said or typed something that made perfect sense at the time but looked
really stupid a little later?

About 3-1/2 years ago I did with my post here titled Not Bad for Our First Week!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those numbers have changed a bit since then but by day 2 the spammers had found a new target.
Our management works very hard at keeping the the spammers off of this site.
Some get through and make a few posts before they are banned.

We use several methods to identify new spammer memberships.
They're not perfect but they are effective to a reasonable degree.
They may also result in accidental bans on legitimate memberships.

If you receive a "Banned" notice when you try to log on, PLEASE email me personally at
[email protected]
Your membership status will be reviewed as soon as possible and I promise a reply from my desk to
your email within 24 hours.

I apologize for inconvenience caused to any legitimate member but if we drop our guard HMEM would
become nothing more than a billboard of ads for a variety of things that I'm too old for! :D

Thank you again for your support and interest in Home Model Engine Machinist.

Rick

Not stupid at all Rick...its amazing how it has grown...and you and all the mods and administrators continue to do a wondeful job. I am constantly amazed at just how quickly spam posts (like this morning) get removed.

Thanks for all you do!!!!

Bill

Well done Rick. I do not know of this most recent event but have been witness to one or two others here and the foul was corrected within a very short time of it being reported. All of the administers here at HMEM have my thanks for there vigilance and understanding. Without it, we would all be up to our, *ahem*, backsides, with Viagra and Geritol ads. (do they still even sell that stuff? If so, Authur Godfrey would be proud. ;D

One of my smf forums was targeted by spammers and when I awoke there were over a 100 posts made - Luckily some of my support admins found and deleted most. I now installed the anti-spam mod and the honey pot mod. Both mods are designed to detect spam ip's and emails. In most cases the spam bot never even sees the site as it gets rerouted and with the honey pot it is a hidden link that once clicked on your ip is added to the spam list.

It is a fair bit of work maintaining a busy forum and it is greatly appreciated by those of us who enjoy the information and experiences shared. Thank you for all the efforts made in keeping the site running. I know I have benefitted form the information here.

cheers Ferd

Yeah! I'm amazed at how short-lived the spam is on here, and serves them right too!
I applaud all those involved in keeping this menace in check.

My applause too. I'm the Chief Spam Killer on a 40K+ member RC plane site. The onslaught never ends. Even with measures to thwart the 'bots' we still detect and ban 20+ spammers daily.

Thanks guys for keeping the spam out of our eyes and off our board!

:)
