When I first bought it 25 years ago I thought, Damn what an old lathe this is.
After many steam, IC and flame eater type engines I decided to try on a Webster.
While making the piston I thought I would share some 'how I do it pictures' that might help someone making their first one.
I first do the lathe work including ring grooves, skirt bore and a hole to the depth of what will be the slot
I then set up in the mill by clamping the spigot in the vice cross grove for drilling and reaming the wrist pin hole
Then, before removing from this setup a flat is milled across the spigot which will serve as the index when it is set up for the cross slot milling.
The spigot is then clamped with the flat held against the stationary jaw of the mill vise which turns the wrist pin 90 degrees to the prior setup.
cross slot is milled.
Setup to cutoff the piston and welcome it to the Webster... the little brass rod held by the tail stock is there so I don't have to chase the part after it parts
