I just found some 1.2" x 2" x2" 6061 alum blocks on ebay for 99 cents each with $13 shipping for as many as you want http://cgi.ebay.com/Aluminum-blocks-1-2-x-2-x-2-/310252448199?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item483c7ca9c7 Seems to be a perfect size for small A to Z type QR tool holders. I...
In a recent post you mentioned using a hacked computer power supply on your x-axis power feed. Could you fill me in on a couple of things? I just hacked a 250w ATX PS and installed posts for +12v, +5v and +3.3v. I also installed a load resistor. Multimeter readings show that I have power at the...
I now have the mill where I can start using it. The last thing done was to fab a mill-head counter-weight. I weighed the head with the motor installed, and it came out to 32#. To make the weight I used an old rusty piece of 3"x3" rectangular tubing I've been saving for just this sort of thing...
The mods to the mill are coming along nicely. A couple of hiccups came up but were quickly (well, not that quickly) worked out. After welding up and painting the base I mounted the X-Y table and found some binding in the Y-axis. I took the table off and sure enough I found I did get a little...
Well, actually a major revamp. I have this nice 6 x 12 x-y table that I have been using on my drill press for many years, and a little while ago I saw the same table on a CNC conversion using an X2 column. Compared to the X2s table this one is beefier, smoother, has less backlash and the gibs...
I haven't seen this mentioned here before, So I would like to post a quick primer on drill chuck removal. This is for most cordless and many corded drills in the 1/4" to 1/2" range.
1 Open the chuck to its max and peer down the hole - you might need a light - and you will see a screw head. This...
About 15 years ago the sliding bracket my Rockwell clone 14" band saw cracked. This is the bracket that holds the axle assembly and is used to tension the upper wheel and adjust blade tracking. At the time the crack wasn't too bad, or in a critical area so I epoxied it. It worked so I promptly...
This was a giveaway at last years Cabin Fever in York PA. The screwed on piece is fairly stiff spring steel. My guess is a scraper of sorts. Any ideas?

My son was visiting this weekend and we decided to go kayaking. When we pulled up to the boat ramp at Lake Nockamixon (Bucks County, Pa) we were greeted with this sight. A half dozen very nice steam powered boats. I know next to nothing about them, but they did look to be original vintage boats...
I was bottom tapping some 10-32 holes and having a little trouble figuring out when I was bottomed. I am right handed and when I switched to my left hand for a little break I found my non-dominant hand was markedly more sensitive as to when I needed to back out to break the chip and when I was...
With 4 days of rain forecasted I decided to catch up on some projects for lathe. The first was a rear cutoff fixture. I wanted a cutoff tool that I could leave setup permanently and since I have a reverse I made it to cut normally and not upside down like many have made. I havent figured it all...
My X2 started to make a strange noise from the controller box when powered up. The noise was like a bearing going bad, sometimes very loud, sometimes lower and usually after several minutes it would disappear. I didn't think there were any moving parts in there until I removed the cover plate...
Here is a neat little trick item I gleaned from a book of shop tips by Roy Moungan (spelling might be off). Just a golf ball used as a file handle. Easy to make, easy to use, fits very comfortably in your hand while in use.

Had a senior moment yesterday and forgot to raise the mill head for flycutting a new piece. You all know the rest, broke the plastic drive gear. So, I popped for a belt drive conversion. My question is since the belts eliminate the need for the high and low gears, can I remove them or disengage...
Critique my setup
Im making plates for a finger brake I am working on and I am not quite sure of this setup. Could any of the more experienced members give me a heads up if anything looks wrong? I want to put a 52-degree (exact angle within a degree is not critical) bevel on the fingerplates...
This is my first contribution to the forum
This project began over a year ago. Shortly after buying an X2 mill I immediately saw the need for a powerfeed and research showed most homebrew feeds were made from auto wiper motors, soooooo a quick trip to the local auto scrap yard and $15 later I...
I found this in a pack of #1 drill bits and it begs the question, how are drill bits made? It looks as if it got fouled up in the manufacturing process. Are the slots cut straight and then twisted, as in twist drill. Or are they cut with the twist?
