I have been working on a the conversion of a 99 cc Stihl chainsaw engine to suit aero application. The plan is for it to power a large scale radio control plane that will be used for aerotowing of radio control model gliders.
I have had it running on the bench with a 26 inch propellor. I had to first cut it out of the saw body using a carbide tipped die grinder. The crankshaft was cut off and the back of the engine which was the original drive side, is now blanked off. I machined the prop hub for it, even though I had never machined anything to a dimension before. It took me three attempts, but the final result is very satisfactory.
Ignition system is a CDI using a hall sensor and a 3 mm magnet stapled into the aluminium prop hub.
