I am trying to build the ignition for my Simple 2-Stroke by Jan Ridders shown here...http://heetgasmodelbouw.ridders.nu/Webpaginas/pagina_tweetakt_motor/tweetakt_frameset.htm

I think I will try to use Jerry Howells ignition module shown here...http://www.jerry-howell.com/IgnitionModules.html

1. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction for a battery. Can it just be any old 6 volt battery or is there anything specific I should be looking for?

2. Also, what about the coil? Can someone point me in the right direction for that? There are so many on ebay and Jerry's explaination on his website left me scratching my head a little.

3. I would like the switch to have an actual key like a really ignition. There's lots of stuff on ebay, but I'm not really sure what will work for sure. Can someone point me in the right direction.

Thank you so much for your ideas. I really have a lot to learn in this area and I really appreciate your experience. Hopefully I can return the favor one day!

Any 6 volt battery will work but generally people use a smaller sealed type of about 4 amps. I have 4 of them for my ignitions and they work fine. With the small ignitions you can use Nimh battery packs also.

As far as what coil to use, if you go with the Jerry Howell ignition they sell a coil that will work with that unit. If you go with an S&S ignition it has the coil built into the board. The S&S unit uses the rechargeable Nimh batteries that have a combined voltage of 4.8 volts. They also sell a voltage reducer so that you can use a 6 or 12 volt battery with their ignition.

I don't understand the part about using a key. Do you just want that for aesthetic reasons?

Key switches must have an amperage rating over whatever your ignition system will draw. All of the switches at McMaster seem to fit that bill, but it depends on your final installation.
The alternative is to use some key-linkage-switch combination.

So if I went with the S/S module, I would still need to purchase a coil, right? Or is it the complete package? Seems a little pricey ($100) but the complete kit would be nice.

I was looking at just a plane double pole double throw switch for the ignition, but I thought a key ignition would looking cooler. I might just want to keep it simple for this one though.

If you buy the S&S single fire ignition it comes with the coil mounted with the ignition system. Here's the link.

It's only $50.00

So if I buy the kit, I only really need a spark plug, right? Will the $6.00 one work alright?

i have the jerry howell ignition on my powerhouse and it works real good, you can buy a coil from them. i also have a s&s that i am going to use on my farm boy hit an miss but have not tried it yet. it comes all built with a coil as already stated, and was $50 either one should work ok for you. jonesie
