Greetings, Well the newbie continues to refurbish the old Sartglen Pixi lathe- mini lathes seem to be harder to work on than larger ones!

Yesterday I was given a homemade bench with large aluminum rotating disk which I think I have heard can be used to sharpen tools or polish metal. Any suggestions on how to temporarily mount a sheet of emery cloth? Any advice or cautions? Thanks, Quincy

spary glue works a treat but you can get sticky disks in all grits try a auto body paint factors

You should be able to buy the discs with the 'sticky' already on them. That is the norm nowadays, either sticky or velcro backed. A box of 50 or 100 isn't too expensive.

If you try to use other glues, you will spend half your time cleaning it off before fitting a new disc, whereas with the ready done discs, they peel off cleanly, ready for sticking a new one on.

Search for self adhesive sanding discs.

Hope this helps

the velcro backed disks are nice you can change out quick and change from one grit to another and back again quickly these are used in the auto body trade as well as the marine and fiberglass shops.
But you did say large bigger sizes are likely to need a sticky disk . the hook and loop are 5"

You might find that the velcro backed discs give a rounded finish to small items, they are designed for smoothing larger flat-ish surfaces not point contact ones. For model engineering size sanding a self adhesive disc will more rigid and sand flatter/squarer.

Six inch self adhesive discs are widely available in at least three grades and can be fairly cheaply bought in DIY stores and not just specialist shops.

On the other hand having a slightly soft abrasive disc might suit your needs better. You pays your money etc etc.
