We had our annual hearing test at the plant today and it made me think
about the noise levels in my own home shop.
Many of us are at the age where we figure what is already gone can't
get any worse. But, when you take the time to think about it, can it?
I was brought up in the mind set that faster surface speeds = better
surface finish when using carbide tools. Many times that leads to a high
pitch squeal that in annoying, but I don't take it seriously.
Then today the audiologists that who was going over our test results
suggested that the loss of high frequency range hearing could help a
person ignore a nagging wife's voice. He also suggested that the same
high frequency hearing loss could keep you from hearing a grandchild's
whispered Christmas wish.

OK so paint me soft! LOL
I'll be wearing the hearing protection.

I was tested in 1999 and the only guy that was more deaf then me was born that way.

I tend to do quiet type work at nights and save the noisy stuff for the daytime. I will wear ear plugs when running a router or any noisy machine.

according to my tests, my hearing keeps getting better, but don't tell the lady friend that

my first shop i worked in, big huge LOUD steel fab shop.....there were days where i had ear muffs over the ear plugs

i have a pair of 200 buck custom ear plugs, worth it for sure...

those of you that have read my intro in the welcome section know I have been exposed to noise over the years. 11 years part time as a range officer in the Air guard then several years in the Fab shop including flight line duties.
Even with all that exposer to noise i was told during hearing tests that my high frequency hearing was excellent and that I could hear a mouse across the hangar. This was when I was well into my forties.
I wear hearing protection in the home shop. The HF noise of power saws and high speed grinders drives me crazy.
Yes using hearing protection pays off.
