I enjoy designing my own engines. I'm currently working on a flame eater and have the following question:
One way or another, I'll need to control the intake. Cam, crank, eccentric... they all provide some type of linear motion. They can all be timed, but the "open/dwell/close" profile will be different. I'm wondering how important the profile is to success.

I can't help on specifics but you could look at the specs of a known good runner, like the Poppin, for inspiration. If your valving arrangement allows any compression to bleed past then that removes a lot of the calculation as well (again like the Poppin where the valve would lift and allow any compression to escape on the 'up' stroke). The Jan Ridders internal valve design opens the valve whenever pressure tries to build, or at (pretty much) TDC, and closes at BDC. It runs, not as well as some, but there's a starting point at least.
