I can't find a good used shwerline lathe, so I want to buy my first book on the subject to start some reading off the WWW.
What do you recommend? and Why?

Are you looking for a book on the Sherline lathe or a newbie book for model engineering? If you want to start model engineering a great book I found and use is "Model Engineering a Foundation Course by Peter Wright" It's got lots of great info easy to comprehend and a good section covering most aspects of the lathe and lathe work. Highly recommended if your to the game.

"Machining Fundamentals" by John Walker helped me get started. It's a good intro book and can often be found in used condition for $20 USD.

Cheers and happy machining

Phil
