I have just been reading some posts on model diesel engines and it seems that injection is the main barrier, I have rebuilt a few Mc Donald Super Diesel stationary engines (not models) and these employ the Brons system for injection , No pump just gravity feed to injector and a needle valve to control flow to a explosion cup, on compression the vapour in the cup explodes which injects the remaining fuel into the cylinder via a few fine holes facing the combustion space acting like a injector, very simple and works well timing is set up by changing compression this is done by shimming between the con rod at the big end, con rod is made in two sections.
Hope this may help some one ,
Lots of nice work out there only wish I could reach some near your standards.
