a long time ago i remember seeing a right angle gear set from the middle ages that used pegs instead of gear teeth. Don't remember what they were called. Used in clocks and winches I am wondering if a person could use a similar set up with ground dowel pins for the cam gear in a primitive engine such as a henry ford engine? almost like an egg beater except the flat stamped teeth replaced with dowel pins. with my new rotary table it would be simple to make up a set using 6061 for the base. john

John, those are called lantern or cage gears.

Yes Chuck, and very much for low RPM applications only! :) The backlash would of necessity be huge, and the noise unbearable, state of the art in wind and water mills tho' ;)
