a long time ago i remember seeing a right angle gear set from the middle ages that used pegs instead of gear teeth. Don't remember what they were called. Used in clocks and winches I am wondering if a person could use a similar set up with ground dowel pins for the cam gear in a primitive engine such as a henry ford engine? almost like an egg beater except the flat stamped teeth replaced with dowel pins. with my new rotary table it would be simple to make up a set using 6061 for the base. john

Yes Chuck, and very much for low RPM applications only! 
The backlash would of necessity be huge, and the noise unbearable, state of the art in wind and water mills tho'
