Hi,

I usually mount my models on some vinyl sheet left over from our bath room floor. This had finally run out so as I have always liked the black and white chequer board floors used in some full size engine houses, I thought I would have a go at replicating one. So a prototype base board was made up using self adhesive vinyl floor tiles. The results are shown in the following photographs. As I like to run my engines on steam after laying the tiles we painted with a clear vanish. I like the result so will make some jigs to cut the tiles more accurately.

Regards Tony.

I used the 300mm sq tiles each had 2 w and 2 b sqs each 150sq made a nice chess board for the large chess pieces i made . See thread

Hi Dave,

I've used Formica type materials in the past, but could never get a consistent size, so last time I took the easy way out and bought ready-cut tiles. Black and white like you have done.

I wish I had thought of that; like Bazmak I cut mine from 300 mm square floor tiles. As there are 10 tiles in each pack I have enough for about 20 square feet!

Regards Tony.

Formica works well, rather than use individual tiles I tend to mask and paint them before several coats of sealer.

Described the method some time ago in this thread

Or Black and White if you prefer
