Can anyone please help.

I have bought an Atlas Sphere lathe and I need to strip down the reversing gearbox as it has jammed. Does anyone know the steps I need to take to get this apart so I can fix it. I have a manual and parts list but they don't show the gearbox in any detail.

I have posted the same thing on the model engineers forum so apologises if you have seen this post before.

Thanks

Mike

First off, remove any gears and collars that are on the headstock end of the leadscrew. It would be better if you removed the gear banjo as well.

Next, at the tailstock end, remove the two screws from the leadscrew support.

Open up the half nuts as wide as they will go, then slide the leadscrew out towards the tailstock end.

Once the leadscrew is out, it is just a matter of a few screws and the reverse selector will be off the machine, and you can then see what the problem is.

I hope this helps.

I have got as far as to remove the leadscrew and gearbox from the lathe but I cannot see how the leadscrew is removed from the gearbox.
