    shop wood stove

I really miss my wood stove in the old shop(in the Yukon where I really needed it). In my opinion a wood burning stove is essential when working with wood. It keeps you warm, gets rid of the sawdust and other waste and no one ever sees your mistakes. In a metal shop it is great for heating parts...

    Bandsaw cutting speeds

Need to pick some brains. I am converting my POS wood cutting bandsaw to metal cutting. I have built a Rube Goldberg contraption to reduce the speed and it works too well. I wanted to get 100fpm which I believe is the proper cutting speed for mild steel. Please check my math below...

    Machinists enemy # ONE........

I spent a fair part of the summer working on the same carbs and learned to do the same same. Another thing I learned was to lay down a large shop cloth to catch the elusive little buggers. Some did escape but were eventually found.

horizontal bandsaw doing a slow hip-hop

Ill add vote for buying best quality blade you can afford and using variable tooth blades. I have never had success with the cheapo blades.

    Gaskets on Steam Engine Heads?

We have used silicone instead of gaskets at work. They do the job but are a real pain in the A$$ to clean up if you have to take it apart again.

    Dont drop your lathe

Not machining related but I had a very uncomfortable walk through the bush to get back to the launch area when the rudder on my sailing dingy parted ways because the person who restored it used screws instead of bolts...

    Checklist needed

I had my mill/drill machine for 4 months and had just spent 40.00 for a "good" 3/4 end mill and was anxious to try it out. I had the part securely fastened in the vice. The end mill tightened in the collet and I was ready. I brought the part up to the endmill and there was a bunch of clanking...

    lessons learned...

Speaking of electrical.... Helped a friend replace his ceiling fan a couple of years ago. We had the switch shut off and things were going well thill I accidentily touched two wires and a whole bunch of sparks showed up. Forgot they use a separate hot feed so you can run the fan with the lights...

    Moving a 310 lb. Shear/Brake/Roll

I moved my 300kg mill into my shop last year. Rent/borrow an engine lift if you can get it in both locations. U-Haul has small utility trailers to rent that have a ramp on the back and are low enough that the engine lift can reach over the sides and place your machine in the middle of the...

    Drill Sharpener

I have had my DD for about three years and really love it. I have it mounted on the wall next to my drill press. When I need to sharpen a bit it is ready for use right away.

How/what to replace the 'oil button'

I go to the local co-op that sells veterinarian supplies for syringes. They have all sizes of needles also. I have used them for years for oilers. They are cheap and very handy. I find the syringes especially useful for injecting cutting fluid when drilling deep holes on the lathe

    Humour in model engineering

Here is a quote from a book by Roy Heinrichs in Manitoba entitled Heroes and Cream Gravy. It is a true story according to the author I took measures to run a reasonably safe farming operation. It was for this reason that I taped a sign up in the tractor cab for my wife. It read "Caution...

    machining in the cold

I have a 16X20 shop with 6" insulated walls. I am able to keep it above freezing with a 110v oil filled space heater. It has an ani-freeze setting that doesnt come on until the temp is below 5C. I used a propane radiant heater for a while last year heating the shop only when I was using it but...

My Bluing die has gone brown

I use the markers too. Found it frustrating until I figured out you have to wait for it to dry completely before marking.

    Seating workpiece in vise

Not sure but probably so... I have a multi hue fingernail because of "smartly" seated a piece in the vice. The hammer bounced off of something and nailed me a good one. After a considerable period of jumping around, kicking things and general mayhem, the cat looked rather pleased with the...

it could be me but i don't think so

I have been here just a short time and have learned an awful lot, thanks everyone. The few times I have posted I have gotten a quick response and have had no complaints. I really apreciate the way newbie questions are handled with respect. I dont frequent boards that treat the newcomers badly..
