The primary heat in my shop is from this stove I made a couple years ago:

It's made of a section of 8" x 16" 1/4" wall steel tubing with 5/16" plate ends welded in. The door is 7/16" plate, has a nice tight fitting air valve and a pre-heating duct inside. I put a baffle inside based on a little Waterford stove I've got in the house.

Truly air-tight; shut off the air and the fire goes out in short order. It' great - heats the 400 sq ft free-standing building nice and toasty all winter long :)

I really miss my wood stove in the old shop(in the Yukon where I really needed it). In my opinion a wood burning stove is essential when working with wood. It keeps you warm, gets rid of the sawdust and other waste and no one ever sees your mistakes. In a metal shop it is great for heating parts to get a shrink fit. The best part is sitting in front of it with a coffee or other beverage and contemplating how to make the next part.
