    Rcexl Ignition schematic

I purchased an Rcexl ignition at the NAMES show last April for the hit & miss engine I’m building. I’d like to add a LED to it in order to aid the timing. Does anyone have a schematic of this ignition so I can figure out where to connect it? Thanks, Jack

Small bench top band saw recommendation

I’m looking for a fairly good quality small bench top band saw (for wood). I’ve looked at both the Skil and Ryobi 9” saws and was very unimpressed with the quality. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? I need a small saw because I don’t have a lot of room in my garage. Thanks, Jack

    Kerzel governor question

I'm building a Kerzel hit & miss. The plans call for a 1/4 inch OD ball bearing for the cam follower bearing. I had a 3/8 OD ball bearing on hand, so I used that. However, I see that I'll need to modify the cam follower so that the governor engages properly. My question is, if the cam lobe is...

    What's it???

I bought this at an estate sale, and I'm trying to figure out what the heck it is. I realize that this is somewhat off topic from what's normally discussed here, but from reading past postings, I know that a lot of very knowledgeable people read it, and maybe someone can help me figure out what...

    Old RPM Gauge (Speed Indicator)

I stumbled across an old RPM gauge (Speed Indicator) in an antique store the other day that I’d like to know more about, and I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with it or its maker. It looks to be very well built, with three scales. Anyone ever seen one of these before, and/or know anything...

    Working with cast iron?

Hi All, I’m starting a Kerzel hit & miss engine. The cylinder and piston are cast iron; however I’ve never worked with this material before. For those who’ve used cast iron, are there are any ‘tricks of the trade’ or things I need to know or look out for when working with it? I’ll be using a...

    Unique air powered engine

Hi, I was at the St. Clair County (Michigan) Farm Museum Old Fashioned Harvest Days show yesterday, and came across a very unique air powered engine. The valves are located in the piston, and the piston rotates maybe 90 degrees as the engine turns over. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the name of...

    Elmer’s Open Column Twin

A month or so ago I was wondering what to build next. While thinking about it, I decided to clean out some old photography magazines. Stuck in the pile was a lone copy of the July 1983 Live Steam magazine with Elmer Verburg’s Open Column Twin on the cover. Someone was obviously trying to tell me...

What's in Two Shop Masters: Frank Mclean and Philip Duclos

Hi, I’m thinking of purchasing “Two Shop Masters: Frank Mclean and Philip Duclos” from Village Press, but before I do, I’d like to know exactly what’s covered in the book. Is Philip Duclos’s Odds and Ends hit & miss engine covered? What else? Can someone give me a very short synopsis of the book...

    Hello from Motown

It just occurred to me that while I have been reading (and adding a few posts) this forum for a bit over a year, I’ve never really introduced myself. My name is Jack, and I’m a retired software engineer. I retired from HP about a year ago where I worked on developing production monitoring and...

    Poor finish question???

Can someone explain to me the cause of this (see the photo) and what I should be doing to avoid it? http://home.comcast.net/~jtgartner/Misc/DSC01443a.jpg As I cut it, the feed seems to jerk as if I’m hitting soft and hard places in the steel. I’m using a carbide inserted tool on a Sherline...

    A2ZCNC quick change tool post

I have a quick change tool post manufactured by A2ZCNC on my Sherline lathe. The problem is, it doesn’t seem to stay in place. No matter how tight I make it (within reason – don’t want to damage the crossslide), it always seems to slowly rotate. This seems especially apparent when using the...
