I received a ER-32 collet chuck today, and tried to put a 1/2" collet into the chuck with a 1/2" pin. I could not get the nut to engage. I tried it with the pin out, and it engages OK. Not sure what the problem is. I tried it with other collets and pins and same result. It will not engage with the exact size pin in the collet.
It seems to me that the collet is not being seated far enough into the chuck.

Any advise?

Herb,
Generally you can't seat the collet with stock in the collet. Though, that depends upon the relative sizes of stock and collet. Install the collet, then put the work in the collet, then tighten the nut.

I have not had my ER32 collets very long, so I am no expert. Are you inserting the collet into the nut first?

You have to fit the collet in the nut first without the pin,it needs to be pushed on and its sometimes harder than others, you need to rotate to find the best position. With the collet ftted to the nut the it should screw on to the chuck
You can then fit the tool or pin and tighten up Regards barry

I didn't realize that you need to insert the collet into the nut first. I tried it and it works great.
I'm inserting a MT5 to MT3 adapter, the the MT3 Collet chuck. I'm reading about .0002 run out on the gauge pin. Good enough for the girls that I go out with. ha ha
Thanks everybody.

As others have mentioned, the collet has to engage with the nut first, under the little washer in the nut, this washer is what pulls the collet out of the taper.

Paul.
